Rambling Thoughts

Hey! I have a lot of thoughts rambling around in my brain so thought it would be good to write them down. If you are here for a review, you might want to skip this post, read my others and another dog product review will be out soon (Plus Christmas gift guides).

Today, I went to my mother's house in Upper Hutt for the last time. She has officially sold her home here, and really cemented her move to Whanganui. She has been living in Whanganui for the past two years but having the home here made it seem like she still was on a holiday. Now it is real. I am truly happy for her, even though it means I can't just pop around the corner to visit her whenever I please. She has shown that no matter your age or situation, you can change your life if you want to. I am so proud of her, moving to a new city seems like an impossible task to me who has been in Upper Hutt all my life. She has done it with grace and resilience, managing to get a new job she loves, work with kids that are absolutely infatuated with her and buy a new house on her own. She constantly inspires me, and has made me push to be a better person in all aspects of my life.

Because of the above I didn't think I would be upset by her selling her house. In all honesty I was quite happy to see the back of it. However, today as I closed the door for the last time and drove out of the driveway I was hit with a wall of sadness. This was officially closing a chapter of our lives. I had lived in and out of that home as mum had owned it, and got through some seriously dark times of my life there. It was a place of happiness, laughter and fun, and memories came flooding back to me as I reversed out of the drive.

I loved and lost Daisy within the walls of that house, and now she will be forever be there as she rests within its grounds. It's weird to think that we are moving on and leaving her behind, but I guess we will always be able to keep our memories of her alive within our hearts. I passed by her grave when leaving and although the Daisy we planted above her has now died (who decided to put a daisy in amongst trees where it gets no sun!), the circle of rocks still show me where she lays. I said my final goodbyes to her and left the grounds.

Life seems to come in chapters, and although the house in Upper Hutt has now officially closed, it's nice to know that a new chapter is opening up. Plus, all good books get better as you go on. I thought I might end up writing some inspiring, thought invoking things, but really I have none. I just think that we need to appreciate the times as we have time, but also, be able to look back fondly on memories that are now in the past.

If you got this far, well done for reading my completely raw, unedited and quickly typed up thoughts. I managed to dig out my hard drive to find some photos from that time.

Chico's first day with us! I love this photo because it shows how far he has come. He was super nervous and was scared of everything when he first arrived.

NZ Natural Pet Food Co. Woof Treats

Hey! We got approached by The New Zealand Natural Pet Food Co. to trial some of their treats and see what we thought of them. As always, these reviews are 100% Diego's and I's honest opinion, and whether something was sent to us for free or purchased by myself it doesn't sway our opinion. Especially Diego's since he has no idea at what money means.

The lovely folk sent us two packs of their Woof Freeze Dried Dog Bites to try in the flavours Wild Brushtail and Lamb. Initial thoughts is that this packaging is effective! It is white with one main coloured image on the front of your meat/vegetables that make that treat up. The rest of the front is mainly black or muted coloured writing. I adore this type of packaging. It's a 'no bullshit' approach that I really appreciate. The back is just as effective, with a clear ingredient list, important notes including the benefits of ingredients chosen (and pictures) and what it contains none of. Props to whoever designed their packaging!

The treats are made up of 85% meat, organs and bones with the other 15% coming from vegetables and other natural ingredients that are amazing for your pooch. The first ingredient on both treats is just straight meat, lamb and wild brushtail, followed by more meat product like tripe, liver and heart. Following that is the fruits and vegetables, as well as organic virgin coconut oil, manuka honey, chia seeds, kelp, mussels and hoki liver oil. They contain no artificial preservatives, flavours or colours. No grain, gluten, wheat, corn or soy.

These treats have been freeze dried into little logs that remind me of some sort of animal poop. Due to the freeze drying they are super light weight, and easy to break into smaller pieces. Although it also means they can be quite crumbly/powdery especially when you get nearer to the bottom of the bag. These treats are perfect for hiking, or camping as they are light enough to carry in your pack and feed to your pooch as you are traveling as a treat but they can also be re-hydrated into an actual meal! This is such a new concept to me, and one I haven't seen before on the New Zealand pet food market. I love it! It works great for us, especially with Summer coming up, as we are often out hiking, exploring native bush and it's awesome that I can bring along food for Diego incase anything happens.

Changes from dry (top photo) to wet

Warning, these treats stink. Not as strong as a fish based treat, but more of a putrid smell that just gets into your nose. I may be sensitive about that though. Thankfully, the smell doesn't leak through the packaging and it's only when it is open can you smell them. They are more scented when wet. The smell also doesn't seem to stick to your hands, only the treats, and leaves your hands after a few moments.

Diego adores these treats. He loves when I get them out, and because of their freeze dried texture, he chews them easily. They are great for trick training for that reason, especially when you are training a new trick and want to overload your dog with tiny treats constantly. There isn't that time waiting for him to chew and digest the treat before giving the next, it happens pretty fast. They are also good for when out on our walks and we are working on his leash reactivity. They are smelly and enticing enough to make him leave a dog for them. That is a winner in my books.

I have decided that I am going to buy another packet to leave unopened to take on all our longer hikes this Summer. This way they won't go old, but will be there in case we get trapped somewhere and can't make it home for Diego's usual meal time. I really appreciate that this company is shaking up the treat industry in New Zealand by making an innovative new treat, with amazing quality ingredients. I think for too long New Zealand has been run by big corporates who don't really care about your dogs wellbeing and put out treats like rawhide and dentastix! (There goes any future collaboration with them hehe) I enjoy that these treats have been made with a range of different uses, and realistic uses at that. I would highly recommend you try out these treats with your pup!

Wellington Pet Expo Haul

Hey! Last weekend I headed down to the Wellington Pet Expo and not only did I pick up some awesome new things, I managed to grab a range of samples to try out. This expo seems to get better every year, and I loved the range of stalls and how passionate all the stall owners were.

Wolves of Wellington
How could I walk past the Wolves of Wellington booth and not pick up anything?! I managed to grab another amazing bandana, and this one I especially love with the frilled edging. I did wonder if this one would be a bit girly for Diego, but he definitely pulls it off! I also grabbed a Snoop from their Planet Dog range which is a great boredom breaker toy. Gretchen also threw in this treat, which I believe she said is some sort of throat!

This photo is a mix of random goodies we got. First off we got a small sample bag of Natures Goodness dog food. This is not a dog food I am interested in feeding Diego as a staple in his diet, but will use these as random treats during training. We also got a sample bag of treats from Superior. This is the brand that makes Possyum which is a great dog roll to use as a training treat. They heard that so many times that they decided to come out with their own range of treats. Will be interested to see how these go down. Lastly, we won this torch from the New Zealand Companion Animal Register. This is a database where you can register your dogs microchip. I think it's a fantastic idea and will mean that you are more likely to be reunited with a lost pet.

We got sent a gift pack of Omega Plus products at the start of this year and absolutely adored the fish treats and oil. I have been meaning to stock up on more oil ever since then, so when I saw that they had a two for one deal I had to jump at the chance. This product is incredible and is well and truly liquid gold. They also chucked in a bunch of sample bags of their food which is also made using Salmon. This is something I could be interested in so I will see how Diego likes this!

 Jimbo's
I love the idea of Jimbo's pet foods, and although I don't actually buy their products very much, I do appreciate the idea behind them. Adding extra raw meat, or feeding a completely raw diet is a great way to feed your dog. I usually feed Diego chicken frames to supplement his current diet, but have been looking at the idea of branching more into the raw diet. They gave us some of their treats to trial, as well as a $6 off coupon for any of their Jimbo's products. I will be making the most of that.

Nutrience
Nutrience is the dog food that was recommended to feed Chico when we first adopted him, and is a great food for Greyhounds. They have recently came out with this new food which has freeze dried portions mixed in with the traditional kibble style food. This to me looks like a great way of making this food even better. I got two samples, plus some coupons and will be handing everything over to my mother so she can see what Chico thinks of this food.

Orijen
Who can ever turn down Orijen? I absolutely adore their food and although I recently changed over to a new kibble, this food will always have a place in my heart. I was upset when they downsized their bags and kept the same price, but people still consistently rave about this brand and Diego did amazing on it. I got given this small bag for free, and it has made me tempted to go back to either Orijen or Acana. Plus a 20% off coupon is amazing!

Butch
I've never really heard of Butch as I don't buy dog roll but supposedly this is the fancy version of the Butch dog roll. We got this as a sample, as well as this awesome dog roll cover. I will be passing these onto my mum as well, as Chico does love dog roll and it will be interesting to see what he thinks of this.

I am not 100% where this is from anymore, but can find out if anyone would like to know. I purchased this warming bed/blanket for Chico as he really feels the cold being a Greyhound. It is self warming, and your body heat will heat it up and keep the heat in. They also done a cooling bed, which when I put my hand in, felt amazingly cool. I thought they were both great ideas, and Chico needed a new bed so I am very interested to see how he likes it.

Finally, we got this adorable rabbit ice cream print from Wellington Rabbit Rescue. My friend is looking at adopting a pair of bunnies so therefore we were hanging at their stall for quite a while, chatting bunnies and staring at the bunnies they had with them. I saw this and couldn't resist as it is absolutely adorable.

If there is anything you would like more information on, or a quick review on, feel free to let us know! What did you buy at the expo? Tag us on Facebook or Instagram.
